Overview of the event

Robotic process automation (RPA) technology is the next frontier for businesses looking to streamline processes, increase productivity and ultimately improve the bottom-line.

RPA typically uses artificial intelligence to handle repetitive, rules-based, back-office tasks. And the market is about to experience a period of "explosive" growth.

The RPA market grew 64 percent to $200 million last year and is expected to grow 70 to 90 percent by 2018 because successful pilot projects are inspiring buyer confidence in the technology, the consulting and research firm reports.

However, there are some barriers to adoption, such as IT departments concerned about data security and loss of control. Plus, “replacing staff with robots in some sectors, such as government, could become a political minefield.

Join us at RPA Summit in January to hear from subject matter experts currently evaluating RPA for their businesses in areas such as Finance, Procurement, HR, Outsourcing, Automation, etc.

X Topic Abstract

Dynamic changes in the global scenario demands for high level of automation in industries, to sustain in the market. Promoting knowledgeable and skilled workforce is the key factor that will influence the development and adaption of emerging automation technologies in Indian industries. India needs a focussed approach in the workforce development to meet the present and future industrial demands and robotics is one of the key technology areas which is likely to have visible impact on the economic progress.

The International Federation of Robotics (IFR) estimates that over 2.5 million industrial robots will be at work in 2019, representing an average annual growth rate of 12% between 2016 and 2019 (International Federation of Robotics 2016). In the present scenario, robotics education and training is essential to promote manpower effectively and efficiently at all levels to ensure the positive impact of robots on employment, job quality and wages.

It requires interdisciplinary skills in systems, measurements, controls and computing. Courses on robotics and automation are to be introduced in the curriculum of interdisciplinary engineering programmes like Mechatronics and Manufacturing systems to improve employability skills of engineering graduates. This requires a proper alignment of theory courses with practical components to meet the prerequisite for learning the concepts of automation.

Standard certification programmes may be directly inducted in diploma and industrial training courses to overcome the shortage of skilled manpower. This presentation covers a case study on introducing Robotics in Mechatronics engineering programme and focuses on the issues related to teaching of interdisciplinary courses, industry interface, course alignment, assessment methods and updation of contents. This will be useful for industrial experts, researchers and academicians to understand the necessity for robotics education and the challenges.
