In the recent years, RPA has become the latest mantra of many corporates to embark upon operational efficiencies and cost savings. RPA allures or appeals to people because of its claim of easy adaptation and implementation. What we fail to understand, is the challenges that are associated with it.

The challenges range from political to peoples' mindset. Organizations need to be better prepared to address these at an early stage of RPA implementation. It is also important that we invest some time to identify and analyze the potential challenges at an early stage. Simultaneously, we need to have the dataset of learnings from early adopters of RAP. This will expedite our process of RAP implementation and drive it towards success.

As the RPA market continues to grow at CAGR of 41% to reach a $1.0 BN market by 2020, the adoption is fuelled by promise of faster ROI subject to applicability and deployment policies of RPA in each organization. What started as automation of Web extraction and business process automation activities in various verticals like FS, Insurance, Healthcare, Logistics, Manufacturing, etc., now customers are thinking how RPA can be applied to other areas like Software Testing as they become more sophisticated in their capabilities like Cognitive skills and self-learning supported by predictive and prescriptive analytics. Although we have many functional automation solutions and frameworks that supports automation of web, mobile, ERP, API and legacy applications, we don’t have capability to address process/workflow, services and test data creation automation besides functional automation. Since many of the large Enterprise organizations and in many of the independent testing engagements, still sizeable testing is done manually. The question being asked is can RPA help in replacing some of the manual testing work where applicable and provide the required overall acceleration from time to market perspective. By now, there are probably very few people in the corporate world who have not heard about the term RPA. Alluring as much as the initiative is, many of us have very grand &misconstrued visions of what it is and how it can transform our lives, our business processes and business models. This is because of the fact that we have early adopters, followers and laggards when it comes to applying these concepts in their organizations.

Many of the early adopters (including those that have been failed and done well in their attempts) havelearnt lessons. For those in the second and third groups, it would be worth mining their experiences to lay a smooth foundation to rollout RPA.

While the core of implementing RPA is critical and enlightening, it is also essential to understand what are the other factors within our own unique organizational eco systems to be considered before we even think of introducing RPA in our organizations. The RPA path from“idea” to “implemented well” is strewn with challenges galore; the way it is with any other change initiative.

While moving from a current state to a future state, it is important to establish synergy between people, process and technology to harness and obtain the most optimal results.

We need to consider addressing fossilized mindsets / patterns, resistance to change, educating all stakeholders about what this is all about. We also need to think about what practices we let go and what new practices would come in.
